How to play War

A pure comparison game in which the higher exposed card captures both cards.

Players
2
Cards
52 cards
Time
10–45 minutes

Objective

Capture the entire deck.

Setup

  1. 1

Deal all cards face down into equal packets.

  2. 2

Players do not inspect or rearrange their packets.

How play works

  1. 1

Both players reveal the top card. Higher rank takes both and places them beneath the winner's packet.

  2. 2

On a tie, each player places the agreed number face down and another face up; higher face-up card takes everything.

Scoring and winning

  1. 1

There is no point score. The player who holds all cards wins.

  2. 2

If a player cannot complete a war, use the house rule chosen before play.

Rules to settle before play

  1. 1

War can run indefinitely. A time limit with most cards winning is practical.

  2. 2

    Aces are normally high.
