How to play Skat

Objective

The declarer bids a game value and then tries to take enough card points or complete a null contract.

Setup

1. 1

   Use ranks 7 through ace. Deal ten cards to each player and two to the skat.

2. 2

   Deal in packets according to the table's chosen formal procedure.

How play works

1. 1

   Auction to determine declarer and minimum game value.

2. 2

   Declarer may pick up the skat for a suit or grand game, or play hand; null games use different ranking.

3. 3

   Jacks are top trumps in suit and grand games. Follow suit if able.

Scoring and winning

1. 1

   In suit and grand games, declarer normally needs 61 of 120 card points.

2. 2

   Game value depends on base value, matadors, and multipliers; failed games are charged double.

Rules to settle before play

1. 1

   Skat scoring is exacting. Keep a reference table nearby.

   Use recognized tournament rules when playing competitively.
