How to play Cribbage

A hand-building and card-play game scored continuously on a pegging board.

Players
2–4
Cards
52 cards and cribbage board
Time
25–45 minutes

Objective

Be first to peg 121 points through play combinations, hands, and the crib.

Setup

  1. 1

For two players, deal six each. Each discards two cards to the dealer's crib.

  2. 2

Cut a starter card after discarding.

How play works

  1. 1

Alternate cards without taking the running total over 31.

  2. 2

Peg for pairs, runs, fifteen, thirty-one, go, and last card.

  3. 3

Then score nondealer's hand, dealer's hand, and dealer's crib with the starter.

Scoring and winning

  1. 1

Hands score fifteens, pairs, runs, flushes, and nobs.

  2. 2

A jack starter gives the dealer two points. First to 121 wins.

Rules to settle before play

  1. 1

Face cards count 10 and aces count 1.

  2. 2

The crib belongs to the dealer and alternates each hand.
