How to play Crazy Eights

A shedding game where an eight changes the current suit.

Players
2–7
Cards
52 cards
Time
10–25 minutes

Objective

Be the first player to discard every card.

Setup

  1. 1

Deal five cards each, or seven in a two-player game.

  2. 2

Turn one card up beside the draw pile.

How play works

  1. 1

Play a card matching the top discard by suit or rank.

  2. 2

An eight may be played at any time and its player names the next suit.

  3. 3

If unable to play, draw according to the chosen draw-one or draw-until-playable rule.

Scoring and winning

  1. 1

The winner scores cards left in opponents' hands, commonly 50 for eights, 10 for faces, and pip value for others.

  2. 2

Play to an agreed target or treat each hand separately.

Rules to settle before play

  1. 1

Resolve a starting eight by returning it to the pack or naming a starting suit.

  2. 2

    State draw rules before play.
